Cumberland Hotel pop-up art gallery
When describing Guoman’s The Cumberland Hotel the words contemporary, iconic and edgy spring to mind. But that’s a claim that many landmark London properties would make....
Creating a point of difference to reinforce this ‘edge’ - and making it something that would appeal unequivocally to its high net worth clientele – is the real challenge. So Siren approached London auctioneers, Dreweatts Bloomsbury, to set up a pop up art gallery in the foyer of The Cumberland. Featuring the best in urban contemporary art, with pieces from Banksy, Shepherd Fairey and Charming Baker, the exhibition lasted for 10 days and culminated in a high-octane auction in the hotel’s Ocean Suite.
Running alongside was an exhibition and auction of luxury vintage – with pieces from the Duchess of Windsor’s private collection and handbags from Chanel and Hermes.
And, if that wasn’t enough, we organised for a fully stencilled Banksy Truck – the only one in the world – to drop by for the morning rush hour.
The results were overwhelming, with coverage as far flung as Hawaii, New York and India and syndicated TV courtesy of the Press Association and Reuters. Bloggers, websites and social media sites buzzed with Tweets and Tags and every single piece was branded with The Cumberland hotel.
